FIGURATION / ABSTRACTION
In the following paintings I have made use of abstract and figurative elements. Text, figures, and the regimental geometry of lines and stripes are juxtaposed with the chaotic abstraction of drips and loosely painted surfaces. The three-dimensionally rendered images stand out against flat textural surfaces, and sometimes the surfaces become three-dimensional as well. These elements create a feeling of displacement, suspense and tension. The random letters allude to loss of meaning and the frozen figures suggest suspended time and memory. They float within their surprising settings, defying the pictorial laws of gravity.
